Animal Care and Control Bylaw Update

Animal Care and Control Bylaw Update

The new Animal Care and Control Bylaw came into effect on May 19, 2026.

RULE #1: LICENSE YOUR PET

It’s mandatory, it’s their ID, and it’s their fastest way home.

BARKS, BITES AND BIG PENALTIES

Stricter penalties for dog attacks, with penalties ranging from $250 to $3,000, and new rules for vicious dogs.

PAWSITIVE ACCESSIBILITY

Discounted license fees for seniors and people on income support, waived licensing fees for non-profit local animal rescues and small changes to license fees.

PAW-LEASE PUT MY SAFETY FIRST

Your pet’s safety is your responsibility. Avoid animal welfare fines for:

– Unsafe transportation of an animal.

– Leaving an animal unattended (hot vehicles, cold weather) or in a yard without access to shelter.

BEE A GOOD NEIGHBOUR

New rules, regulations, and limits on backyard hens, beehives and rabbits.
